About St Catherine's Hospice

Our catchment area includes around 380,000 people, and our services touch around 2,000 patients and families each year. Care is provided unconditionally regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, religious or cultural belief.

We work with patients and families to help them achieve what is important to them. Care is personalised to each individual and their circumstances, and aims to help people live in comfort, and with dignity, independence and choice.

Because we know that time in hospital can be stressful and unnecessary when living with a life-shortening condition, our aim is to provide the support people need to be able to stay at home if that is their wish, or to receive care on our in-patient unit at the hospice.

Although we do care for people in the last days of life, we are here for people from diagnosis and through bereavement. Around 50 per cent of those who are admitted to our in-patient unit have their symptoms better managed so that they can go home again.

Care they Provide

St Catherine's Hospice provides varying degrees of care for the people of Central Lancashire, including:

  • At The Hospice - Our in-patient unit at St Catherine's has 19 beds and provides the most intensive symptom management and psychological support around the clock.
  • In the Community - Our care isn't restricted to the in-patient unit at the hospice - it reaches out across Chorley, Preston and South Ribble through our Clinical Nurse Specialists and Hospice Support Assistants who visit people at home, including nursing homes and care homes.
  • Lymphoedema clinic - Our Woodside Clinic in the grounds of St Catherine's Park treats those with cancer and non-cancer lymphoedema, and is for both adults and children.
  • Medical Outpatient Clinics - Clinics are held at St Catherine's Hospice - the service provides practical and emotional support for adults living with life-shortening illnesses in Preston, Chorley and South Ribble.
  • Carers and Family - The care of St Catherine's isn't only for our patients - we're here to support loved ones and carers in a range of different ways.
  • Bereavement and Remembrance - The care of St Catherine's doesn't stop when a loved one has died - we're here to support loved ones through bereavement, and to provide opportunities for our community to remember and reflect together.
  • Referrals and Discharge - We prioritise referrals on the basis of need, and the type of service that may best meet that need.
  • Compassionate Communities - Along with our specialised services, St Catherine's is committed to empowering patients, loved ones, neighbours and colleagues to be able to support themselves and each other when facing a serious illness or bereavement.
