Learning English Classes

English for speakers of other languages (ESOL)

A range of providers in Preston who offer English for speakers of other language courses (ESOL) that can help you to learn or improve your spoken English language.

Classes are available for complete beginners who need help getting started in reading and writing, through to classes for confident speakers.

Preston College

Preston College offer a full-time (3 days a week) course to our 16-18 learners. There are four levels, from beginners to intermediate (First Steps — Entry 3). The classes run from September until June, but you can join throughout the year (subject to availability).

You will receive the skills to help you improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as learning about life in the UK. You will also study maths, IT and some vocational subjects. All of these important skills will help you to progress into education and employment.

All lessons are taught at Preston college with experienced and qualified teachers and you will be asked to provide residency proof, for example, proof of pre-settled/settled status in the UK (if you were not born in the UK). Please bring any high school certificates that you have from your country.

You will need to apply for the ESOL course and once your application is received you will be invited for an assessment and a chat with the ESOL team at Preston College.

University of Central Lancashire - UCLan

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) offer free English classes for people aged 18+ years. Students, staff and members of the public are welcome.

Free English classes are normally available October - May, with classes normally 2 hours. You can join classes at any time during the year - just come to the class at the start time.

Range of levels 2023/24:

  • Pre-Intermediate
  • Intermediate
  • Upper-Intermediate
  • Advanced

Not all levels are always available.

Lancashire Adult Learning

Learning or improving your English will help you in all aspects of life, including social skills, studying and getting a job. If English isn't your first language, Lancashire Adult Learning ESOL courses will help you to improve your speaking, reading, writing, listening, grammar and punctuation.

With venues in, Accrington, Burnley, Chorley, Hyndburn, Lancaster, Morecambe, Nelson, Rossendale or Preston.

WEA Adult Learning within Reach

WEA offer ESOL skills for life to develop confidence to read advanced texts in English.

Learn how to improve your reading skills to get the most out of living in the UK. You'll continue to learn about different styles of text and gain tools to interpret them.

ESOL courses are divided into three areas: reading, writing, and speaking & listening.
